Something New in the Lens Department

The main point of this post is to show off my darling Dudley. Isn't he precious? He sits in that papasan chair pretty much all day. Except when I'm home, he sits next to me on the couch (like he's doing right now). Anyway, last week I got a 40mm lens for my camera. I got rid of my 50mm 1.8 because I had it for a long time, and I was just ready to try something new. There's not a whole lot of difference with this one...but it's nice to be able to get just a little wider! I do feel like it might be a tad sharper, especially if I'm far away. I took some engagement portraits this morning, and the full body shots I took with the new lens are as sharp as with my really high end lens. This never happened with the 50mm!

I hope you've all had a great Saturday! I had a couple of photo shoots this morning, had a run and did some thrift shopping with Paige. It was a great day! I've also been watching a LOT of Parenthood. I just started the second season tonight, and I'm hooked. Are any of you into that show?

this kid has a point and shoot

Guess what, folks?! I finally bought myself a point and shoot camera. I've been wanting one for a while so that I can keep a camera with me when it isn't practical to have my dslr. An example would be when I went on a 27 hour roadtrip to CA a few years back. Who wants to tote a big hunk of a camera around to places like Disneyland and the County Fair? It's just cumbersome, you know?

My biggest concern was being able to take quality images on whatever point and shoot I chose. I knew that if I got one that took mediocre pictures, I would never use it and I would have wasted my money. Manual controls was a big part of my decision too because I am used to doing everything manually. Canon (yeah, I'm loyal) only appeared to have 2 cameras that fit my needs. The S95 and the G12.

squash guy at the Farmer's Market on Saturday. He invited us over to see his garden and cook squash with him...not going to lie, it was creepy.

After combing through reviews and comparisons I decided on the S95. The G12 was $100 more, but it didn't have $100 worth of additional features in my opinion. I love how small the s95 is too. I can't think of anywhere that this camera would not be practical. It's the perfect size for a casual camera, and it performs well enough to be a dslr substitute...basically it's perfect.

Once I bought the camera (and borrowed a memory card), I was shooting anything and everything. Sarah and I woke up early Saturday to go to the Farmer's Market, so these are some of the first pictures I took with my camera. I loved it! I think they definitely look comparable to what I would have taken with my dslr AND it was easier to carry around. I got some great squash and herbs at the market. It was great to get outside and walk around on such a nice day. All the storms have made the weather wonderfully mild these last few weeks!

After the farmer's market, I cooked some of the squash I bought and ate on the back porch with a book. I've just started reading Janet Fitch's Paint it Black. It's fantastic so far! I love dark subject matter in books for some reason. I think it's because I don't have a lot of darkness in my own life, so reading about it like a fascination.

I had the pleasure of babysitting my little sister for most of Saturday afternoon. It was a last minute thing, and I had a lot of wedding pictures to edit so we had a movie marathon. This allowed me to edit while she watched the movies, which worked out well. Ok it was good until we watched Earnest Scared Stupid. We had to turn it off because it scared her. I felt bad at first, but then I remembered that I watched Aliens with my granddad as a young child and I turned out ok. A few nightmares aren't going to scar her for life...I hope.

On the way home I played with my camera some more and took some pictures out the window. Yes, folks, I'm one of those people. We have had some absolutely stunning sunsets lately. I don't take pictures of them often since pictures just can't do a sunset justice, but in this case I thought it would be fun. I'm such a sucker for a pretty sky.

If any of you are in the market for a nice camera and don't want to splurge on a dslr, I highly recommend the S95! Honestly, unless you have kids that move really fast and play sports, you don't even need a dslr. So if you're on a budget, save your money and get a high quality point and shoot like the S95 or another brand's equivalent.

Entering the world of L series

On Monday I ordered my very first Canon L series lens. Today....it arrived! B&H is crazy fast with shipping, and I highly recommend them. This is the 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. I really love prime lenses, so I've decided to slowly get all the primes I will need to shoot and get rid of my other lenses. I will probably get one longer and then a wide (24mm probably). Until I collect them all, I will be adoring this 100mm!

I got to use it a little at work today. I went with a biology class on a field trip to identify trees and got some shots for the school's website. It was great to use the new lens!

The clarity seriously makes me giddy. I haven't tried it in low light yet, so we'll see how I feel after that. Based on reviews, it should perform very well!

I've been DYING to get a macro. I've had my new camera for almost a year without a macro lens, and it's been killing me. My miniature photos don't look near as good without a macro. But now I have one! If you can't tell, I'm extremely excited.

That's all I have for today. I hope to be able to show you guys more photos with my new lens soon! I really can't wait to shoot a wedding with it. Until then, happy Wednesday!

My Heart Skips a Beat

I read a lot of vintage clothing lovers' blogs, and I see them say that certain places and pieces make their heart speed up. A room full of 1930s dresses will make their palms begin to sweat and their stomach do flip-flops. Well, I get that way when I find vintage cameras. I wasn't interested in collecting them until I inherited about 10 of my grandfather's cameras. I've started searching for them in the stores around my town and I've got quite a collection going! My built-in bookshelves are becoming my camera display area.

I found this little treasure this afternoon and I'm SO excited. Not only is it the sexiest camera I've found, I can actually get film for it! I ordered some as soon as I got home, and I can't wait to try it out.

When I saw this on the table,  I had no idea what it was. I didn't see the box under it, and I thought it was a cigar case or something like that. Anyway, I just decided to pick it up and look at it and I noticed the Polaroid manual underneath it. That's when my heart started skipping, and I realized what I had in my hands. I have a weird obsession with things that are this practical. I LOVE that I can fold it up and stick it in my purse.

This is how I'm displaying it. I just love the brown color!

I'll hopefully have some images to show you soon.

Does anyone else have this camera? How do you like it?

Tiny Treasures

I try to stop by the antique store down the road at least once a week just to look around and see if there's anything new. It's been a week or two, but recently I found this lovely Oscar de la Renta scarf and snatched it up. On the same trip I found a cute little Kodak Brownie Hawkeye camera which I'm so happy to add to my collection!

I went to the Oscar de la Renta website and the model on the intro page was wearing a scarf that reminded me of the one I found. I might have to get a beautiful red/orange coat to go with it!

Here's a camera like the one I picked up. This one is offered by ImSoVintage, who happens to have 19 pages of spectacular vintage home decor. Is it bad that I'm foaming at the mouth?!
